| External Ionization vs Internal Ionization for Ion Trap GC/MS |

|
| In the Thermo Scientific ITQ™ Series of GC-ion trap mass spectrometers, external ionization allows separation of ionization from the ion storage and analysis. This ensures that while ions are pulsed into the trap for analysis, most neutral molecules are pulled away by vacuum. Ion integrity and spectral consistency are maintained and the ion trap stays cleaner. By contrast, internal ionization allows the entire sample to flood into the trap where ionization and storage takes place. Neutrals have more time to interact with the sample -- with a higher probability of altering critical spectral data. |
