Norwegian and Russian scientists have reported a study,
published in the Journal of Environmental Monitoring, that investigated the
levels of managense and other welding-associated metals in air and in the
biological fluids of welders and ex-welders. Air filters were digested with aqua
regia and hydrofluoric acid and analysed by ICP emission spectrometry. Whole
blood samples were digested with nitric acid and analysed for cadmium, lead,
manganese and mercury by sector-field ICP-MS (Thermo Scientific Element 2).
Urine samples were also analysed by the same technique.
